OK today we're talking about the top five things I don’t really like about my 2015 Ram ecodiesel
The #5 things I don’t really like about this truck is the DEF fluid. Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a really messy fluid to deal with. I know it's for emissions and I'm not opposed to emissions and doing things right. I just don't think diesel exhaust fluid is the answer. I also don’t think some of the other pollution control things they put on this truck were the right answer either.
I know a lot of guys delete their catalytic converters or delete the EGR coolers and other things. I think with all the engineering technology out there someone could figure out something better.
So coming in at #4. The thing I don't like about this truck is the turbo lag. This truck goes really well down the freeway. It acts weird. I know RAM had trouble with Emissions and had service bulletins and recalls to de-tune the engine. This caused some people to really complain about the acceleration after this modification.
I guess you have to just sit back and enjoy driving like a grandpa and just don't expect the truck to rocket off at stop signs.
Coming in at #3 things that I don't like or I don't trust or I don't feel that good about are the engine electronics and all the sensors in the computer. I have had this truck and the computer throw codes air flow issues. It also throws EGR codes so just overall it seems like the electronics controlling the engine are too sensitive. Or there are too many sensors or the truck was released without enough testing or something.
Coming in at number two on the things I don't like about this truck is the EGR Cooler. It is in the engine bay underneath big foam things so it is Temperature sensitive, which is hard on a truck that can be driven in all temperatures. EGR exhaust gas recirculation has an air cooler and it has a valve on. The exhaust gases go in the cooler then another valve, then vent into your heads. From my personal experience I had the EGR cooler replaced under warranty factory recall it lasted about a year and 3 months. I took it back and had it replaced again under warranty and then that didn't fix the problem. I still have it throwing EGR codes if I'm just putting it around town.
I can reset the code for the EGR cooler then drive 500 miles down the freeway at high speed and everything's just fine so it means that everything is working. Then I'll come back and I'll go to the grocery store from my house and it'll throw an EGR cooler fault. So the sensors are too sensitive or something else is going on. I don't feel like taking it to the dealer again.
The #1 worst thing about this truck and this is my personal experience is the transmission the transmission can't seem to figure itself out. There's not a lot of reliability in it. I have had a weird shifting pattern going from like 15 miles an hour down to 0. Other than that I think it's a six or eight or nine speed transmission. Well it actually is a ZF TorqueFlite 8-Speed Automatic transmission. You never really feel it shift. It does shift nice and smoothly, but the biggest reason I hate it. Is because at sixty-eight thousand miles it completely just went out. A truck should get a lot more out of a transmission. Especially when the truck is all stock. I will say I was towing an enclosed trailer that weighed about 3,000 pounds with 2 mountain bikes and some camping gear. That shouldn't have been enough to ruin the transmission. The other thing that happened that I don't like is this truck was imported to the US from Canada. I didn't realize what that meant when I bought it, I thought I was just getting a good deal. Because it was imported Dodge Ram doesn't stand behind it. So when the transmission burned out, they would not warranty it. There was nothing I could do except spend about $5,800 to get it repaired and replaced. So this is my experience and I'm moving on to a 2021 Ram Cummins.
